New Construction Zones Create Hazard PDF Print E-mail

A motorcycle accident occurred at the American Fork 500 East interchange in the I-15 Core construction zone. Motorcyclist, Kris Messersmith, never meant to ride on the old on-ramp that was under construction, but he says that the space was not clearly blocked. He rode through a large gap between the orange barrels and had to lay his bike down. This caused him significant injury, namely a torn rotator cuff, a fractured ankle, and road rash from ankle to hip. UDOT has now placed more barrels in the space through which Messersmith passed as measure for increased awareness of the construction zone. The incident is still under investigation.

Motorcycle Vigilance

While this may not be as likely to happen while riding a bicycle, the Utah motorcycle lawyers admonish all riders to always be aware of their surroundings. This is especially true in the evening and night when a rider's vision becomes more impaired. Although this will help, it will not guarantee that an accident will not happen, so Utah motorcycle lawyers recommend wearing protective gear as well.

Motorcyclists travel at faster speeds than bicycles, therefore they are prone to greater physical harm in case of an accident. There are several items, in addition to a helmet, that can be worn as a way to protect their bodies:
1. Jackets
2. Gloves
3. Boots
4. Pants

Although none of these items are required by law, they are specially developed to protect motorcyclists. The jackets and pants are usually made out of nylon, leather or Kevlar, and the boots are usually reinforced with plastic caps to better protect riders.

Do You Properly Own and Operate Your Motorcycle? PDF Print E-mail

Riding a regular bicycle does not require a separate license because it is man powered. However, there are separate restrictions for driving a motorcycle legally on state roads. Both bicyclists and motorcyclists have a greater propensity to get injured because they are more exposed to the road as well as whatever collides with them. This is why it is important for motorcyclists to understand their legal obligations.

Utah Motorcycle License Laws

Motorcycles can be a faster way to ride than a bicycle, but a separate test and license is required to drive a motorcycle on Utah roads. If the rider already has a Utah license, then that rider will only need to be approved for a motorcycle endorsement, which will require a written and skill test. If a rider does not have a Utah drivers license then it is possible to apply for only a motorcycle license, but the steps are essentially the same for a regular license.

Motorcycles require a different set of skills in order to operate safely, so there are new restrictions basted on the size of the motorcycle a rider is tested on. A rider will be restricted to driving the size of the motorcycle they are tested on. If a rider is tested on a motorcycle 90 cc or lower the restriction will be O. If the motorcycle is 249 cc or lower then the restriction is 2, and if the motorcycle is 649 cc or lower then the restriction is 3. The only way to have no restrictions on what motorcycle a rider can operate is if the rider is tested on a motorcycle of 650 cc or greater.

70-Year-Old Dies in Motorcycle Accident with Semitrailer PDF Print E-mail
Written by The Christensen Lawfirm
Monday, June 27 2011
A 70-year-old man was killed in a June 16 motorcycle accident after he collided with a semitrailer on I-215. Larry Ith of West Valley City was entering the freeway as a semi was attempting to pass in the far right lane. The motorcycle merged while on the southbound onramp from S.R. 201; both the man and his bike fell under the rear axles of the truck. Mr. Ith died at the scene.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Mr. Ith at this time and hope they will find some measure of comfort.

While neither fault nor reasons for which the accident occurred are entirely known, it is important to recognize the risks involved in operating any sort of motor vehicle, and in this case, motorcycles. Road safety is the priority for all involved, and familiarity with common risks to motorcycle safety will decrease the likelihood of future accidents.

There are several reasons why motorcycle accidents are so dangerous. These include motorcycle drivers being more exposed to general injuries and head injuries, road surfaces and obstructions in the road, uneven payment transitions and poor surfaces. Bad road design and hazards (street lights, blind corners, debris, uncovered drainage pits and pot holes) are all realistic impediments to safe driving.
It is not known how many of these played into the untimely passing of Mr. Ith, but surely controllable factors such as the increase of road safety measures and the elimination of rider distractions should be a constant focus.

If you or someone you know has been injured in a motorcycle accident and another person was at fault, call the Utah motorcycle accident attorneys at the Christensen Law Firm immediately.
