Our third blog for motorcycle safety awareness month focuses on some general riding guidelines.  Many of our readers are experienced riders, and may think that they do not need to review basic riding techniques.  However, it is easy to become complacent in your basic skills as you develop more advanced riding techniques.  Here is a quick review of basic riding safety guidelines.

Safety Step Three: ride in a safe manner.

Some Utah motorcycle accidents are caused by simple riding mistakes.  Two of the most common riding mistakes are navigating corners at high speeds and driving while under the influence of alcohol.  Of course, these mistakes have easy remedies.  Always ride at the speed limit to ensure you have full control of your bike when negotiating a corner.  Also, never ride under the influence of alcohol.  Even just one drink can hinder your riding ability.

Many motorcycle accidents result from the dangerous errors made by cars and trucks.  Bikers can take certain precautions in their riding to help prevent such an accident.

Remain visible.  Motorists often have difficulty seeing bikers on the road.  This accounts for a large number of motorcycle v. car accidents.  To keep yourself visible to surrounding cars and trucks, be sure to avoid riding in motorist’s blind spots whenever possible.  If a motorist doesn’t see you and begins merging into your lane, honk your horn to get the driver’s attention.  Make sure your headlight works and keep it on whenever you are riding, even during the day.

Ride defensively.  As a biker, the only thing between you and the road is your helmet.  You are at a greater risk of serious injury than car and truck drivers.  Ride defensively to avoid an accident.  Before stopping, flash your brake light to warn the drivers behind you that you are about to slow down.  Do not tailgate when you are following a vehicle.  Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead so you have adequate time to respond to the vehicle’s actions.
