As time passes, the form and the function of motorcycle helmets become more and more integrated.  However, not all helmets are created equal, and as more statistics and laws come out regarding the dangers of riding without a helmet, motorcycle companies have been investing a lot of money into making safe helmets that their customers want to buy.

The list of motorcycle helmets is almost as long as the number of motorcycles, so the most important thing to do is to take some time, find a style, fit, and look that you like, and then make sure that the helmet’s safety rating is high.

Two Helmets to Get You Started

VECTOR-2_HAWK_GREEN_B

Aria Vector-2 Hawk Graphic Helmet

The official press release regarding the recent release of this new Arai Helmet reads:

Expanding its already impressive 2014 lineup, Arai Helmet, Inc., makers of world class, handmade helmets for more than six decades, has announced the new Vector-2 Hawk graphic is now available for purchase. The Vector-2 Hawk lives up to its namesake with bold, feather-inspired graphics above angular geometric elements. Three color combinations are available, including a dynamic Red on Red, a cool Blue on Blue and a stealthy Grey on Frost Black with Green accents, providing plenty of options for any style of rider.

With Arai’s customizable FCS Cheek Pad system, a high-flow ACR-type crown ventilation system, and high visibility, this helmet will keep you safe and comfortable.

Bell Star Carbon Custom Fit Helmet

Since Bell’s original “If you’ve got a $10 head, wear a $10 helmet” advertising campaign, they have continued to push the limits in safety and technology.

Last fall, Bell launched its all new “Custom Fit” program, which uses 3-D imaging software to map your head.  The scan takes less than a minute and your customized Star Carbon helmet is ready for you in two days.

In their review of this product, CycleWorld.Com wrote:

Custom Fit differs from off-the-shelf in two ways: 1) The expanded polystyrene (EPS) liner is specific to the end user, and 2) the removable foam interior is simplified, with separate crown and neck-roll padding. The rest is “standard” Star Carbon—TriMatrix composite shell, Velocity Flow ventilation with Flow Adjust, Magnefusion magnetic strap keeper, 3Mode NutraFogII faceshield with tool-free ClickRelease, and integrated speaker pockets. Fit is like nothing I’ve previously experienced. Although nicely finished, the liner is quite hard, so if you’re seeking a pillow-like experience, you won’t find it here. That said, cinched tightly, the helmet feels like it is floating, barely contacting my head, with no pressure points, regardless of the length of time I wear it.
